Father's Day, My Way
For Mother's & Father's Days we subscribe to the philosophy that it should be a day of enjoyment and relaxation or fun for the parent in question, not necessarily a day dedicated to family time. In our house, we spend quality time with our kids every day. Every weekend is full of playdates, birthday parties and fun excursions. Mother's Day is for ME; it's MY day, not their's. For Mother's Day I want to sleep late, have a quiet, peaceful meal (i.e. NO kids) and do something I enjoy (shopping, pedicure, reading, etc) WITHOUT the family I spend the other 364 days with.
We have two boys. They are ages 8 and 10. They fight all the time. They're also best friends all the time, so go figure that out.
This past Sunday was Father's Day. Our original plan had been to go out for lunch at a restaurant my husband has always wanted to try (because this is what HE wanted to do). We were getting ready to leave the house and my children would NOT. STOP. FIGHTING. We were both dreading the meal before we even left the house. What's the point in going out to eat with annoying people who stress you out?
We did something semi-revolutionary. We told the kids they were acting like little assholes and that we didn't want to hang out with people who act like that. We left the house and had a delicious lunch by ourselves. They could not believe we were doing this.
Next time they'll remember this lesson (yeah, right)! That'll show them (dream on)!
Not the first time we've left the kids home alone. Came home a couple hours later... the kids were fine, the house was fine.
The best part is, as we were pulling out of the driveway the little SOB's were shouting their orders out to us: 'Chicken tenders!' 'Cheese fries!' 'Bring me back a strawberry milk shake!'
Apparently they didn't even fight once we were gone. What the hell?!!? Mom and Dad finally give you the opportunity to finally have the knock down, drag out, shank-wielding, eye-gouging brawl you've been lusting after for the past 8 years without any chance of us being there to break it up or intervene..... and this is the time you guys decide to get along and behave yourselves?
We didn't bring those little bastards back a damn thing.

Okay, I am laughing out loud...especially at the last 3 paragraphs.
